رله ی بوخهلتس مجهز به دو المان آلارم و قطع است . المان بالایی ، سیستم آلارم را فعال می كند و المان پایینی هنگام وقوع اتفاق در روغن داخلی مخزن اصلی ترانسفورماتور باعث تحریك Tripping Coil دیژنكتور ترانسفورماتور شده و ترانسفورماتور را از مدار خارج می كند.
هر یك از المان ها دارای محفظه ی الومینیومی سبك و توخالی به صورت فلوتر ( شناور ) است كه حول یك محور می تواند چرخش نماید .
یك كلید جیوه ای روی بازوی هر فلوتر نصب شده و در اثر عواملی مانند كاهش سطح روغن ، سرعت بیش از حد مجاز حركت روغن و ورود گاز به محفظه ی رله فعال می شود .
چنانچه میزان گاز كم باشد المان بالایی فعال شده و سیگنال آلارم را ارسال می كند و اگر شدت خطا بیشتر باشد میزان گاز ایجاد شده بیشتر شده و باعث تحریك المان پایینی و خارج شدن ترانسفورماتور از شبكه می شود .
در حالتی كه نشت روغن در ترانسفورماتور وجود داشته باشد ، محفظه ی رله از روغن تخلیه شده و باعث قطع ترانسفورماتور می شود . در قسمت بالای رله ی بوخهلتس یك شیر سماوری برای نمونه گیری از گاز جمع شده در داخل رله و تخلیه آن پس از حصول اطمینان از دفع اشكال و یك دكمه فشاری مكانیكی جهت شبیه سازی خطا و تست سوئیچ های آلارم و قطع نصب شده است .
